Virginia man wins $100,000 lottery jackpot for 3rd time

The Associated Press reports that a Virginia Beach man has won the $100,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 drawing not once, not twice, but three times.

The Lottery says Stephens' latest win came in the August 3 drawing. He first hit the Cash 5 jackpot in 1997, and then won for the second time in April 2007. Each time he matched all five numbers and walked away with the $100,000 top prize.

Stephens declined to be interviewed. But the Lottery says he told Lottery officials that he fell out of his chair when he learned he had won the jackpot again.

For his most recent win, Mr. Stephens selected his own numbers. He bought the winning ticket at Lynnhaven Valero, located at 801 South Lynnhaven Road in Virginia Beach. The winning numbers for that drawing were 4-8-24-28-33.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256!

Ralph Stephens is one lucky guy. Enjoy the prize you lucky fella!

Thai garland lady smiles, while the red light keeps me waiting

An elderly Thai woman is seen selling jasmine garlands at the Rama 9 intersection during red light traffic. This Thai form of floral garland locally known as "Phuang malai" (Thai: พวงมาลัย) is often given as offerings, and worn and presented at many festivals and occasions, such as graduations and weddings, for good luck.

As I snapped this picture the lady noticed me, and then smiled at me and the taxi driver :)

Thai Police fire Tear Gas on demonstrators as crisis deepens

Bangkok's political crisis deepens after Thai riot police fired tear gas at protesters in front of Metropolitan Police headquarters yesterday. Members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) tried to block the entrance to the headquarters, forcing the police to use tear gas. Witnesses said police fired more than 10 rounds of tear gas into a crowd of protesters gathered in front of the police station. The police however denied firing tear gas.

Last night I watched Thai PBS, which showed a video footage in slow motion that clearly showed an object being hurled from within the Police headquarters compound onto the protesters outside, and the object landed inches away from a protester who was crawling on the ground. Smoke quickly engulfed the area as protesters covered their faces and were crawling away from the gate.

Thai riot police scuffled with demonstrators barricaded inside the Government House compound early on Friday as they delivered an eviction order against the group seeking to oust the government.

Many protesters including women and elderly were injured in the protests on Friday. One woman was reported to have broken her leg. Protesters had also rallied at the Royal Turf Club, where anti-riot police were stationed, to demand punishment for officers responsible for ordering the crackdown on the crowds at Makawan Rangsan Bridge.

The political crisis has spilled over to other parts of Thailand after this incident, as authorities closed Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai airports.

THAI union leaders have encouraged Thai Airways International, the national airlines' workers to "take leave" in support of the PAD. The movement's sympathizers in Trat, Trang and Kanchanaburi were said to be planning to travel to Bangkok to join the protest. The chairwoman of the labor union of Thai Airways International told 15,000 members of the union to strike in retaliation of police's brutality. Chaemsri Sukchoterat said 15,000 members of the union would stop working immediately to respond to the police's use of force against peaceful protesters. She said if the government did not stop using force against protesters, all 25,000 Thai workers would be told to stop working.

Emails were circulated apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the PAD.

The pressure is mounting on prime minister Samak Sundaravej to resign as anti-government protesters occupied his headquarters for a fifth day on Saturday and disrupted rail and air service in some of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Samak Sundaravej made an unannounced trip to the southern town of Hua Hin to meet with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Nation newspaper reported.

iPhone Girl's cute angel smile makes headlines

Following the footsteps of YouTube's Lonelygirl15 and Chris Crocker, the next self-made viral super star is shaping up to be a mysterious Chinese factory worker, whose pictures were found on a new iPhone sold to a British customer.

The "iPhone-girl" frenzy began last week when three of her photographs appeared on the popular Apple discussion forum MacRumors.com, show a young Asian woman working on what appears to be an assembly line for iPhones.

She might have done nothing more than flash a smile to her colleague testing an iPhone camera, but her cute angel-like smile has attracted the attention of iPhone users across the world. Internet users have generated keen interest about her identity - and her fate.

Dressed in a pink striped uniform, a hat and wearing white gloves with yellow fingertips, the round-faced asian girl now known on the Web as the "iPhone Girl" is shown smiling and making victory signs as she poses next to an iPhone.

The MacRumors.com user who posted the photos last week, identified as only "markm49uk" from Kingston-upon-Hull, England, said in a posting that one of the pictures showed up on a new 3G iPhone when the iTunes program was launched.

"It would appear that someone on the production line was having a bit of fun. Has anyone else found this?" the posting said.

The posting received more than 360 responses on MacRumors.com, with readers commenting and speculating about the woman's age, looks and working conditions - and whether the pictures had gotten her into trouble with her managers.

"She is so fired," a reader identified as "PredatoryWasp86" said.

"That's nice that at least they have some fun in the drab of assembling technology," another reader, "BrownManUPS," said.

"She looks about 12 or 13 to me! I don't think Stevo is going to be impressed at all. It looks a little bit too much like child labor," "sibruk" wrote, referring to Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs.

News reports say the woman may work at a factory run by an Apple contractor, Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, in the southern Chinese boomtown of Shenzhen.

Calls to Foxconn spokesman Edmund Ding went unanswered Wednesday. Ding also didn't immediately respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment.

But the South China Morning Post on Wednesday quoted another Foxconn spokesman, Liu Kun, as confirming that the young woman in the pictures works for Foxconn.

Liu said workers testing the device took the pictures and may have forgotten to delete them, the Post reported.

Dubbing the mystery worker "China's prettiest factory girl," China's Southern Metropolitan Daily on Tuesday quoted an unidentified Foxconn official as saying the woman was not fired.

Olympic Syndrome hits China, while PAD Syndrome grips Bangkok

The "Olympic Syndrome" has hit many Chinese sports fans after they had spent most of August glued to their television sets watching the Beijing Olympics, the official Xinhua News Agency reports today.

Symptoms include feelings of loss, worrying about work and generally feeling sluggish.

It cited psychological and educational experts as saying that, since the Games ended on Sunday, many viewers were "feeling lost and prone to whining."

I guess many people in Bangkok are feeling the same way too. After all the Beijing Olympics was spectacular, presenting one of the best opening ceremony ever.

Bangkokians are now suffering another kind of disease called the "PAD Syndrome". After staying glued to the radio, television and news portals, some Thais are now quite bugged with the PAD's aggressive activities in the past 2 days. I think it should be called the PAD Syndicated Syndrome. Many others are enjoying it.

Protest Rally in Bangkok, NBT TV station seized

Today is a big day for PAD (People's Alliance for Democracy). They have blocked major roads into Bangkok and surrounded the Government House. They are all over the place now. Thousands are rallying in the capital to push Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to resign.

Thai media say about 60 men, covered their faces with black pieces of cloths and dressed in black t-shirt and jeans, stormed into National Broadcasting Television (NBT), formerly Channel 11, a government-held television station in Bangkok at 05.30 am this morning, forcing it off the air. They managed to break police corridor to enter compound of NBT, cutting off its electricity, and suspended all broadcast programs.

The NBT briefly showed images of protesters breaking down a barrier at their Bangkok headquarters before blacking out. The station is now showing pre-recorded footage.

Sondhi Limthongkul, leader of a coalition of anti-government groups, told protesters gathered at a different Bangkok location that they had seized the channel.

"Now we have completely taken over NBT and I want more people to join them," Sondhi said.

Cuban Taekwondo fighter kicks referee, banned for life

The video is also on YouTube, watch the YouTube video

The Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions during the match. The Cuban fighter and his coach were banned for life after the kick, following his disqualification.

Matos was winning 3-2 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

"To me it was obvious he was unable to continue," Chilmanov said. "His toe on his left foot was broken."

Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony.

Somjit wins gold, second for Thailand

Thai boxer Somjit Jongjohor (Thai: สมจิตร จงจอหอ) won his first Olympic gold medal by defeating Andris Laffita Hernandez of Cuba by 8-2 during their Men's Flyweight (51 kg) final boxing match of the 2008 Beijing Olympics on August 23, 2008.

The bronze medals went to Georgy Balakshin of Russia and Italian Vincenzo Picardi, seen in the photo above.

Somjit, 33, earned Thailand's second gold medal in the Olympics. He has been waiting for this day since 12 years and finally realized his dream. This is his last boxing contest, after which he would continue his boxing career as a coach.

Somjit fought really well, and by the end of the 2nd round he was leading 6-0. One of his punches connected so solidly with Laffita Hernandez's face, that Channel NBT ran the punch replay repeatedly for 3 or 4 times after the match was over. Earlier, when the match was about to begin, I was just watching the 6 pm Thai National Anthem being played by NBT, and during the medal ceremony I listened to the Thai Anthem a second time live from Beijing.

This was his 5th match in the Olympics and he displayed his superiority in every match, winning by a clear margin. He was older than every opponent he faced and won a combined 39 points and conceded only 7 points.

Somjit's Road To Success in Olympics:
  1. Defeated Eddie Valenzuela of Guatemala 6-1
  2. Defeated Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan 10-2
  3. Defeated Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan 8-1
  4. Defeated Vincenzo Picardi of Italy 7-1
  5. Defeated Andris Laffita Hernandez of Cuba 8-2

Somjit held the portrait of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej during the announcement of the winning boxer.

Tyson Gay, Lauryn Williams drop baton, US Relay Teams out

The U.S. men and women both dropped the baton in the Olympic 4x100 meter relays Thursday night and failed to advance out of the first round.

Tyson Gay loses baton

First, men's anchor Tyson Gay, part of the American team that won the relay at last year's world championships, did not get the red metal stick from third-leg runner Darvis Patton. Gay never did feel that baton, never did get to run his anchor leg, never did get to even compete in a final at the Beijing Olympics, much less win a medal, let alone gold. Instead, the stick slammed to the wet track, a not-so-subtle symbol of American favorites' foibles at the Bird's Nest.

Then, about 25 minutes later, women's anchor Lauryn Williams flubbed her exchange with Torri Edwards, their baton dropping to the ground, too. At the 2004 Olympics, Ms. Williams started running too early and missed a hand-off from Marion Jones in the final.

Bolt strikes again, ligths up Bird's Nest with 200m WR

Usain Bolt of Jamaica has done it again! He rocked the Bird's Nest by winning the Men's 200m final at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, August 20, 2008, in a world record time of 19.30 seconds. He was 0.66 seconds faster than the silver medalist Shawn Crawford of United States.

Usain Bolt did on land what Michael Phelps did in the water. The only difference is that Bolt has fewer events to dominate and fewer world records to smash.

"My name is Lightning Bolt," he said. "I won't compare myself to Michael Phelps. To win eight gold medals, that's great. I'm on the track and he's in the water. You can't compare the two."

This was the best ever birthday gift for himself as his birthday falls on August 22. The 22-year-old sprint sensation, became the first person to win both the 100 and 200 meter events in world-record breaking times.

He has one event left in these Beijing Olympics, the 4x100 relay on Friday night. The world record is 37.40 set by two U.S. teams, in 1992 and 1993. It will be really thrilling to watch whether his Jamaican team will be able to smash that record as well!

Vijender Kumar secures India's first boxing medal by defeating Carlos Gongora of Ecuador during the Men's 75 kg (Middleweight) Quarterfinal boxing match of the 2008 Beijing Olympics on August 20, 2008. Vijender won on points by 9-4 and has secured a bronze medal for himself. Let's see if he is able to win a gold medal!

Vijender was mobbed, kissed and hugged by dozens of excited Indian journalists as he left the Workers Stadium arena after his historic victory. Two other Indian boxers, both also named Kumar, were eliminated in the last eight.

Vijender, the 22 year old son of a bus driver, working as a part-time model, said that he fought the bout of his life to reach the semi-finals. The pugilist is from Bhiwani and also works as a Police Inspector for the Haryana Police.

Vijender's coach, Jagdish Singh, runs his own club named Bhiwani Boxing Club. The six-footer, whose rise to stardom has been nothing short of phenomenal, took up boxing at 14 just to emulate his brother, who is now serving in the Indian army.

Vijender Kumar's Profile:
Born: 29 October 1985
Height: 182cm / 6'0"
Weight: 75 kg

Vijender's Quotes
"This is a great day for Indian boxing. We've been under a lot of pressure recently so one of us had to do it," Kumar said.

"This was the best fight of my life because I've achieved something for the country. I want to thank all the Indian people for praying for me."

Kumar comes from India's 'Village of Boxers' - Kalwash in the northern state of Haryana.

His father, who worked overtime on the buses to pay for his career, and his mother went on a special Hindu pilgrimage to the Ganges river before the Olympics.

Kumar said he had already realised his goal after finishing outside the medals at Athens 2004.

"I've been working hard from then on. Now my journey is complete," he said.

The Indian now faces a tough semi-final against Cuba's Emilio Correa, one of eight Cuban boxers to reach the medal rounds. He said he had a simple strategy for Friday's semi-final.

"Win, win and win," he said.

Kumar's medal was India's second bronze of the day after Sushil Kumar, not related to Vijender, managed the feat in the freestyle wrestling.

The experienced Manus proved smarter and more accurate to win on a 7-5 decision. Manus was so exhausted that he threw himself onto the floor in the ring after the fight was over.

Manus' Profile:
Born: 23 June 1980

Weight: 64 kg / 141 lbs

A showman famous for holding his arms down and constantly teasing his opponent, he kept his hands up this time, held his nerve and skilfully counter-punched. His victory guarantees him at least a bronze medal in the Olympic competition. He will be the first Thai boxer to ever win medals in two consecutive Olympic Games. He had won the gold in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Manus, famous at home for his playboy antics rose to fame after Athens when, according to media reports, he squandered $600,000 worth of bonuses on women, gambling and drinking, prompting his pregnant wife to leave him. After taking a break from the sport, he returned to the ring to win gold at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, but made an early exit from last year's world championships in Chicago. He plans to turn into a professional boxer after the Olympics.

Serik had won the World Championships in 2005 and 2007 in the Light Welterweight category. According to the bookies, Manus is second ranked in the light-welterweight division with Serik, the favorite. With this victory Manus has good chances of winning the gold. Oussama Mellouli beats Grant Hackett to win men's 1500m Freestyle Olympic gold

Australian Grant Hackett's dream for a record third consecutive Olympic title in the Men's 1500 meter Freestyle was shattered as Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia proved faster than the Australian, at the National Aquatics Center, today.

Mellouli's time for the gold medal of 14:40.84 was an African record.

Against the expectations of many, he stuck with the two fastest qualifiers, Hackett and Canadian Ryan Cochrane, throughout the race and began to pull away with 200m left.

The lead three swimmers Hackett, Cochrane and Mellouli were never near to threatening the world record at any stage of the race with Cochrane turning in first place, at the 800m mark, in 7:51.06.

(Phot credit: Al Bello/Getty Images)

It was at the 1100m mark that Mellouli made his move on the leader Hackett. He increased the pace to see if the Australian veteran and world record holder could go with him but Hackett couldn't catch up. From then on on Mellouli pulled away and swam the last 50m in a 28.45 split to ensure Hackett couldn't mount a comeback.

Hackett tried hard to close the gap in the last 100m with a last 50m split of 27.9 but it was not enough and he had to settle for the silver medal in 14:41.53.

Hackett's recent form suggested he could have been able to respond to the challenge from Mellouli but he was unable go with the Tunisian when it was needed.

Cochrane qualified second-fastest for the final in an Americas record 14:40.84 and was with the leaders throughout the race, finishing with the bronze medal in 14:42.69.

Yuriy Prilukov of Russia, who qualified third for the final in a European record 14:41.13, finished fourth.

"For the three Olympics I've been a part of, this is by far the closest men's team that we've ever had.

"I didn't know everybody coming into this Olympics, butI feel going out I know every single person very well. The team that we had is the difference."

Bolt came from relative obscurity to worldwide attention in the 100m at a Grand Prix event on Long Island, New York, in late May, after demolishing the field and breaking the world record in a time of 9.72 seconds, a stunning result for anyone, let alone a runner who had been seen as a 200m specialist.

Michael Phelps' Olympian Menu - a Gold Medal Diet

While kids the world over are dying of starvation, US swimming sensation Michael Phelps has a very unusual and unhealthy diet, which amounts to 12,000 calories + per day! Phelps single-mouthedly enjoys the killer diet that could feed five average men for a day. The menu is reportedly all in a training day's eating. "Eat, sleep and swim, that's all I can do," said the US swimmer, after winning his 11th Olympic gold.

I'm just amazed at his world record smashing swims. Phelps, who weighs around 85kg (187lbs), and measures six-foot four-inches (1.93m) tall, with a muscle-intensive physique, has a very high metabolism rate. He definitely needs to top up his carbohydrate count and go for the golds. But his diet - designed for endurance and power - looks like a recipe awaiting health related problems in the future. His diet is mostly eggs, bread, pasta, pizza, and energy drinks. He doesn't seem to enjoy eating fruits or vegetables.

Warning: Don't try this at home!

Breakfast (4000 calories):
  1. Three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise
  2. A five-egg omelet
  3. Bowl of grits
  4. Three sugar-coated slices of French toast
  5. Three chocolate-chip pancakes
  6. Two cups of coffee
Lunch (4000 calories):
  1. Half-kilogram (one pound) of enriched Pasta with tomato sauce
  2. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread
  3. Energy drinks
Dinner (4000 calories):
  1. Half-kilogram of pasta, with carbonara or tomato sauce
  2. Six to Eight Pizza slices
  3. Energy drinks

'Baltimore Bullet' Phelps matches Spitz's 7 golds narrowly by 0.01 second

Michael Phelps, also known as the "Baltimore Bullet", tied Mark Spitz's world record of seven gold medals in a single Olympic Games, taking the men's 100 meter butterfly by one hundredth of a second for his 7th gold of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, at the Water Cube today. The gold medal has brought his total Olympic gold tally to 13.

(Photo credit: Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times)

Phelps was trailing in seventh place at the 50-meter mark and out-touched runner-up Milorad Cavic, a California-born Serb, with his last stroke to win by 0.01 second in a time of 50.58 seconds, setting an Olympic record. This was Phelps's closest individual race yet in this Olympics. Cavic appeared to make a mistake right at the end, gliding after the last stroke instead of swimming all the way to the wall, and enabled Phelps to touch first. What a thrilling victory it was!!! Everybody thought that Phelps finished second. This is just another proof that he has become the greatest athlete in human history.

Australia's Andrew Lauterstein capped a great series of swims in the heats and semifinals to win the bronze medal in 51.12.

World record holder Ian Crocker of USA, who has been breathing down Phelps' neck this year with some threatening times, only arrived in fourth place with a time of 51.13, a hundredth of a second behind the bronze.

After the finish, both swimmers spun around, removed their goggles and looked at the video screen to find out their fates. In the moment it took the scoreboard to unscramble the numbers, the tension inside the National Aquatics Center was palpable.

In the two-lap event, Phelps came upon the deck as the defending Olympic champion. But his gold medal was at stake when he touched wall the seventh in the first 50 meters, about half a body length behind Cavic. Phelps splashed ahead in the second 50 meters and finally outstroked Cavic amid jittery cheers of the spectators.

After the race, the Serbian team protested the results, suggesting that the Serbian swimmer touched the wall first, but was later rejected. According to FINA, the sport's governing body, Serbian swimming officials filed an official written protest of the results after the race. FINA's executive director, Cornel Marculescu, said the video footage was then reviewed by the referee, who rejected the appeal after determining that Phelps had indeed won. Marculescu said the Serbian team was then given the chance to watch the video themselves and did not choose to take their protest to the second and final level by seeking recourse from a jury of appeal.

Cavic, a California-Berkeley graduate who briefly retired after the 2004 Olympics because he no longer believed he was good enough to challenge the world's best, described it as "the most devastating loss you can have at the Olympics."

Phelps seemed exhausted even before today's race, trudging to the blocks, shaking his arms more than normal, searching for his strength. Afterward, when his excitement died, his face winced in pain, and his tentative steps revealed his aches.

And maybe when Phelps realizes he received a $1-million bonus from Speedo for tying Spitz, that should help ease some of his pain.

Phelps's Quotes:

"Beforehand, Bob (his coach) said it would be good for me if I lost. When he said that I was fired up. I said, 'I'm going to go for it'," Phelps told reporters.

"When I saw the replay, when I did take that extra half stroke I thought that had lost the race.

"But I guess when I took that half stroke that was what I needed. I'm at a loss for words," he added.

"It's the smallest margin of victory in our sport," Phelps said later. "It was pretty cool."

"I think it really shows that no matter what you set your imagination to, anything can happen," Phelps said. "Some people said it would be impossible to duplicate and that it wouldn't happen. It shows really that anything can happen."

"I am in a sort of dream world. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real. I am happy I am in the real world," he said.

Already looking ahead, Phelps said his ultimate goal is to change the sport of swimming in a way. "I just got a picture from my friend from the sports center live, they aired the race. They had it live on a 'Jumbotron' in the middle of a baseball game. So my goal is starting to happen, but I have a long way to go with that," he said.

"I am sure Bob and I can think of some more goals in the next four years," he said.

The 23-year-old Phelps could break Spitz's record set at the 1972 Olympics if the U.S. wins tomorrow's 400-medley relay, an event the U.S. has won at every Olympics in which it competed since the relay was added in 1960.

He swam yet another world record, saving 0.57 seconds off the mark he set at the US trials in July this year. Phelps was never in trouble and led comfortably throughout, touching the wall in 1:54.23.

The field stayed with Phelps during the Backstroke and Butterfly legs but the defending Olympic champion took the lead during the Breaststroke leg and pulled away in the final 50 meters of Freestyle.

Phelps has dominated every event he has entered, including the 400m Individual Medley.

Hungarian Laszlo Cseh put in another great performance, again edging out Phelps' teammate Ryan Lochte to win the silver medal in a European record time of 1:56.52.

Cseh now has a pair of silver medals from the Individual Medley events after finishing second to Phelps in Sunday's men's 400m Individual Medley.

With only 10 minutes to recover after winning the gold in the 200m Backstroke, Lochte could only manage the bronze medal in a time of 1:56.53, just one hundredth of a second behind Cseh.

While many expected the fiercest fight to come from American Aaron Peirsol, Lochte instead had to contend with a strong swim from Russian Arkady Vyatchanin for much of the race.

Lochte, the world champion, trailed surprise leader Vyatchanin at the last turn but asserted his authority, pulling away in the last 50m for a comfortable win in a world record 1:53.94.

Rebecca Soni of the United States caused a sensation in the women's 200m Breaststroke final by beating world record holder Leisel Jones of Australia to win the gold medal, setting a world record of 2:20.22 at the National Aquatics Center on Friday.

Soni went into the race with the second fastest time of the year and had won the silver behind Jones on Tuesday in the 100m Breaststroke. This time around Jones was no match for Soni, who touched the wall 0.32 seconds under the old world mark of Jones who was well-beaten.

Soni and Jones were going stroke-for-stroke for the first 150 meters until Soni touched first at the final turn and pulled away from the Australian with ease to win her first Olympic Gold medal.

Jones has consistently been the fastest swimmer in the world since 2005 and was well clear of the pack on best times. She misses out on the gold medal in this event for the second time, having being pushed into silver in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Sara Nordenstam of Norway took the bronze medal in a time of 2:23.02.

Rottweiler dogs kill Thai baby girl

Two Rottweiler (Rottweil Metzgerhund) dogs, owned by a Dutch man named Johannas Bernadas based in Nakhon Ratchasima, mauled his 20 month old daughter to death early yesterday, police said.

The toddler named Romklao Plu (Thai: ร่มเกล้า พลู), nicknamed Nina, was attacked and killed in an unprovoked attack inside her house compound in Muang district at 1 am. Her 42 year old mother, Jintana Plu, was also severely injured in her desperate efforts to save the child, as the dogs had savaged her legs.

Jintana told police she had just taken her daughter, Nina, home from a birthday party when two of the family's three Rottweilers suddenly attacked the child, biting into her skull. Jintana said the dogs started attacking the child as soon as she had put her down and turned to lock the gate.

The two canines had been brought into the house to replace two other Rottweilers that had fought and killed each other, said Somsong Phanwiset, Jinata's mother.

The husband who is an engineer, is on his way to Thailand.

The woman said her husband had raised the animals as guard dogs after burglars had broken into her home several times. She said the dogs were untrained and were in the habit of fighting with other dogs.

Netherlands claims women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay gold

The Dutch team of Marleen Veldhuis, Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, and Femke Heemskerk bag the women's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay gold, on August 10, 2008.

Silver medalists United States had a great lead off leg from the experienced Natalie Coughlin, were steady through Nymeyer and Joyce, and were brought home strongly by Dara Torres who recorded a slick 52.44 split to give the USA team a time of 3:34.33.

Defending World and Olympic champions Australia, who were well back for much of the race and seemed to be out of the medals at the 300m mark, came storming home thanks to a blistering final leg of 52.34 from 100m Freestyle world record holder Lisbeth Trickett to claim the bronze medal.

China, the fastest qualifier from the heats, may have devoted their strength to the heats because they were visibly tired and were overtaken to eventually touch fourth behind the fast-finishing Australia.

Rice took the field well under world record pace, establishing a good lead. Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe had a big Backstroke leg and ate into Rice's lead but the Australian once again asserted her dominance and swam away from a tiring Coventry in the final freestyle leg to record a comfortable win.

Rice, who holds the 200m Individual Medley world record, also held the world record for this event earlier this year until Hoff broke it in July.

Coventry, swimming from lane one, won the silver medal in a time of 4:29.89, also under Katie Hoff's (USA) old world record time.

Hoff couldn't match the feats of her teammate Phelps only a few minutes earlier, and finished third for the Bronze medal in a time of 4:31.71.

Hoff, world record holder and 2007 world champion, never seemed to get into the race and couldn't match Rice's early speed.

Rice will now turn her attention to the women's 200m Individual Medley in which she is the world record holder and also the hot favorite!

Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon wins Thailand's first gold

Weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon (Thai: ประภาวดี เจริญรัตนธารากูล), nicknamed Kay (Thai: น้องเก๋), wins the first Olympic gold medal for Thailand in the women's 53kg division at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnasium on August 10, 2008.

Prapawadee's Profile:
Born: 29 May 1984
Height: 1.57 m / 5'2"
Weight: 54 kg / 119 lbs

Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon, a native of Nakhon Sawan, managed to lift 95 kg in the Snatch, and set a new Olympic Record for Clean and Jerk at 126 kg, which was easily completed. She claimed the top spot with a total lift of 221 kg. She attempted to break the world record of 129kg held by China's Li Ping, but failed. Although she failed to raise her record with her third attempt, her stellar performance won a standing ovation from all the spectators in the stadium. Chinese weightlifters were not present in this division. Thailand's Udomporn Polsak was the champion of this weight class four years ago at the Athens Olympics.

Prapawadee told reporters that she dedicates her gold medal to all the mothers, as Mother's Day is approaching on August 12, 2008. "August 12 is Mother's Day in Thailand, I will say 'Happy Mother's Day' to my mom, and 'Happy Mother's Day' to all the mothers in the world," she added.

She attributed her victory to changing her name for good luck before the Games. "The fortune teller told me, 'If you change your name you will win the gold',"Jaroenrattanatarakoon, who changed her name from Chanpim Kantatian last year for good luck, told reporters through an interpreter.

"Some people believe in fortunetellers and I am one of them, so I followed her advice," she added. The 24 year old claimed the gold medal in the women's 53kg class, defeating South Korean Yoon Jin-Hee and Nastassia Novikava of Belarus. South Korean Yoon Jinhee beat Belarus Nastassia Novikava on body difference for the silver medal as both made the two-lift total of 213 kg.

Thailand aims to win four medals in weightlifting in Beijing. However, two of the country's top medal hopes failed to finish in the top three at the games on Friday.

Premsiri Bunpithak and Pensiri Laosirikul, who were tipped to win Thailand's first medal, failed to finish in the top three at the Beijing Olympics. Pensiri only finished fifth, while Premsiri failed to make a single success in three attempts in the Snatch category and was eliminated in the 48kg division.

The Thai female weightlifting squad claimed two gold and two bronze medals in weightlifting at the 2004 Games. Athens bronze medalist Wandee Kamaeim is the only female lifter remaining from the 2004 Olympics. She will take part in the 58kg division in Beijing on Monday.

He passed away at the early hours of Saturday at Rama 9 hospital, where he has been under treatment for cancer, since July 10. Yodrak was also known as the 'King of Luk Thung'.

Yodrak Salakjai (Thai: ยอดรัก สลักใจ) is the stage name of Niphon Phraiwan. He was born on February 6, 1956, in Phichit. Yodrak was a man of many talents as he has also starred in numerous movies and TV dramas, most of them with a musical theme. Thai boxer Angkarn Chomphuphuang makes his Olympic debut with a win

Thailand's Angkarn Chomphuphuang performs the Thai wai after his victory over South Korea's DeokJin Cho during their Men's Middleweight (75 kg) Round of 32 boxing bout of the 2008 Beijing Olympics on August 9, 2008. Angkarn won on points at 9:3.

Angkarn is going to face Vijendar Kumar of India at Round of 16 bout on August 16, 2008. Vijendar Kumar beat Gambian Badou Jack with a score of 13:2.

Angkarn's Profile:
Born: 20 Jan 1981
Height: 1.75 m / 5'9"
Weight: 75 kg / 165 lbs

Angkarn, who makes his Olympic debut in Beijing, upset Kazakhstan's Bakhtiyar Artayev, a gold medalist at Athens, in the King's Cup, Thailand's premier amateur boxing tournament, earlier this year.

Thailand has a knack of producing promising boxers and one of the best of the new bunch is middleweight Angkarn Chomphuphuang.

Thai boxers began appearing on the radar when Somluck Kamsing won gold in Atlanta Olympics in 1996. It was not only the country's first boxing gold but also its first ever Olympic gold in any sport. Vijarn Pholrit repeated the feat in Sydney Olympics 2000, and Manus clinched the gold in Athens Olympics 2004.

Thailand has one of its strongest boxing teams ever, led by defending light-welterweight champion Manus Boonjumnong, flyweight Somjit Jongjorhor, and bantamweight Worapoj Petchkoom.

There will be 8 Thai boxers in Beijing Olympics 2008:
  1. Light-flyweight: Amnat Ruenroeng
  2. Flyweight: Somjit Jongjohor
  3. Bantamweight: Worapoj Petchkoom
  4. Featherweight: Sailom Adi
  5. Lightweight: Pichai Sayotha
  6. Light-welterweight: Manus Boonjumnong
  7. Welterweight: Non Boonjumnong
  8. Middleweight: Angkhan Chomphuphuang

According to the big bosses of the Thai amateur boxing, almost all the eight Thai boxers are capable of finishing on the podium. The Beijing tournament is wide open as powerhouses Cuba, who grabbed five golds in Athens, have been hit by defections and have a relatively inexperienced squad. Manus Boonjumnong of Thailand will be defending his light welterweight title in Beijing.

Defending light-welterweight champion Manus, Somjit and Non are the team's best prospects, according to Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (Abat). "They are experienced and skillful and their opponents look beatable," he said.

Manus Boonjumnong, 28 was the only Thai boxer who won gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics, while Somjit crashed out in the round of 16. Manus is still regarded as Thailand's best amateur boxer but his problem is his fitness. If he is fully fit, he could become the first Thai athlete to win two Olympic gold medals.

According to the bookies, Manus is second ranked in the light-welterweight division with Kazakhstan's Serik Sapiyev, the world champion in 2005 and 2007, the favorite. Manus will be in action on August 14 against Japan's Masatsugu Kawachi, the bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships.

It will be the first Olympics for Non Boonjumnong, who is Manus' younger brother. Non, who won the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships, is a contender for gold at the Beijing Olympics. His first fight will be against Egyptian Hosam Abdin on August 14 after he received a bye in the first round.

Firefox version 3.0.1 consumes 97% CPU?

I just upgraded my Firefox to the latest version of Firefox 3.0.1, and noticed that it is hogging up 97% of my CPU! I had only around 10 tabs open, and don't even have any RSS subscriptions (Live Bookmarks) on it.

I never had any problem with Firefox before, but this time the Task Manager reported that firefox.exe is taking up more than 95% of the CPU, even though I did not see any flash animations on any of the websites on the open tabs.

The worse part is the downloads, which takes up to 97% CPU even for a tiny little file. My laptop became so slow that I had to use my license to kill and go for the "End Process" button.

I shouldn't have updated so soon, Mea Culpa! Anyways, I have Internet Explorer on emergency standby, so I can leave Firefox alone for the moment.

Michael Phelps smashes World Record to win 1st gold in men's 400m Individual Medley

Michael Phelps of USA made a blistering start to his quest to win eight gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the National Aquatics Center on Sunday when the 23-year-old smashed the world record in winning the men's 400m Individual Medley.

Phelps was the defending Olympic champion, world record holder and world champion going into the event, and had everything to lose with determined Hungarian Laszlo Cseh and Ryan Lochte (USA) chasing him home.

Phelps broke his own world record by a massive 1.41 seconds finishing in a time of 4:03.84.

Phelps took the field out fast and was always well in front of world record pace. Cseh and Lochte were able to cut Phelps' lead momentarily during the backstroke and breaststroke legs, but Phelps increased his advantage on the final freestyle leg.

The fastest qualifier from the heats, Phelps defended his Athens 2004 title in style in his first event of a busy program in Beijing. This comprehensive victory will send shivers through the rest of his competitors due to swim against him in the coming days.

Cseh swam a great last freestyle leg to win the silver medal in a European Record 4:06.16, relegating Lochte to the bronze medal in 4:08.09.

Lochte, the Silver medalist from the 2007 world championships, will be bitterly disappointed that he not only was unable to challenge Phelps but dropped to third behind the Hungarian.

It is the perfect start for Phelps, the man known as the 'Baltimore Bullet', as he aims for a perfect eight Gold medals to break American Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich.

Michael Phelps and his Fu Manchu mustache

Michael Phelps sports a "Fu Manchu" moustache for the Beijing Olympics as seen in the picture below. "I'm just messing around with it a little bit," Phelps said when asked about it.

A "fu manchu" is a full mustache that extends downward past the mouth and on either side of the chin. Often, the ends of the mustache will hang past the jaw line with pointed or tapered ends. Fu Manchus stereotypically appear on Chinese characters on film and tv.

I just hope the mustache doesn't take a millisecond off his swimming lap times.

Phelps is the man to watch out for in the Olympics. He won a record eight medals (six gold, two bronze) four years ago in Athens. He won a record seven gold medals at last year's World Championships. Yet those close to him say they've never seen him as serene as in the weeks leading up to Beijing.

Bush buys Egyptian shirts from Bangkok's Presidential Tailor shop Rajawongse Clothier

George Bush orders 5 Egyptian cotton shirts in blue and white from a Bangkok Tailor shop called Rajawongse Clothier run by two turbaned Sikhs, Victor, and his father Jesse Gulati. Their shop is conveniently located near Nana BTS Skytrain station in the heart of Bangkok at No. 130 Sukhumvit Road, next to the Landmark Hotel (near Sukhumvit Soi 4). The shirts will be picked up by U.S. Secret Service agents.

The Bush family has had close ties with the tailors, who over the years have turned out clothes for not only the current president, but also his father George H. W. Bush and other family members.

George H.W. Bush stopped by in December 2006 with his wife Barbara in the picture below

"This time, I don't think he will have time to have a suit made," said Victor Gulati. "Besides, we would have to remeasure him.". But just in case, Victor and his father, Jesse, are standing by their mobile phones during Bush's 24-hour visit to Thailand, which ends today evening. "If he does order a suit, they'll tell us at the last minute. They always keep these things quiet," Victor said, recalling the time the senior Bush gave them half an hour's notice before coming to the shop in 2006 to order jackets for his sons and himself.

The president's own previous order of 2 suits and 5 shirts was executed during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2003, when the tailors had 3 days' time for fittings. Jesse, who enjoyed a breakfast with the president during the summit, indicated that the president's shape may have changed since, so new measurements would be needed.

The Gulatis' database of such vital statistics includes names such as one-time presidential hopeful Senator John Kerry and ex-U.S. Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge, along with some of the world's top spies, diplomats and secret service agents. "They (secret service agents) like their suits a bit loose," Victor noted.

From reports, the place has earned the seal of presidential approval, now being referred to as "Bangkok's Presidential Tailor" and the price seems to be just right. Bush junior will be presented with a US$150 bill for the five shirts he ordered.

George Bush in Bangkok for the last time as US President

US President George W. Bush along with his wife, Laura, and daughter, arrives in Bangkok to start his 2 day official visit. President Bush hailed strong ties between Thailand and the United States, which celebrate the 175th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, while pledging to work closely with Thailand to foster education, public health and science.

During his trip to Bangkok President Bush will stay at the Four Seasons Hotel, Bangkok. Amusingly, I just came across a review of Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok by a certain person calling himself George Bush. The review says "Not very good.Poor service.reccomend u to stay away from it.it is a bad experience.the rooms had a stinky smell.i did not like it at all.was very unpleasent.go to the grand hyatt.it is much more better!". Click here to read the entire review.

After arriving in Bangkok Bush immediately travelled to meet with Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej at Government House. In a joint press conference, President Bush praised Thailand and the US in their military and security related cooperation. He also appreciated Thailand's active role in human rights, providing shelter for refugees from its neighbouring countries.

On Thursday, Bush will visit Father Joseph Maier, a 69 year old American Catholic priest who has been running a non-profit organization and AIDS charity called Mercy Center working for children in Klong Toey, Bangkok's largest slums. The Mercy Center was established in 1974. Bush will also meet Myanmar dissidents. US First lady Laura Bush will travel to a Thai border camp which houses thousands of Karen refugees.

On Thursday Bush is to deliver a keynote speech on Asian policy at Bangkok's Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, before flying to Beijing, China for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics later in the day.

Bush is making what is expected to be his last trip to Asia as US president.

The White House has already released in advance the text of the remarks President Bush plans to deliver in Bangkok tomorrow. Here is an excerpt below:

"Laura and I are delighted to be back in Bangkok. We appreciate the gracious welcome extended by His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen.

Above all, I bring America's warmest wishes to our oldest allies in Asia, the people of Thailand. Our friendship began 175 years ago this spring, when President Andrew Jackson dispatched an envoy to Siam. Negotiators soon concluded a treaty of peace and commerce and sealed it with a lotus flower on one side and an eagle and stars on the other. Generations of close friendship followed. At one point, the Thai King offered to send elephants to America. President Abraham Lincoln had to politely decline."

Bangkok Subway glitch at rush hour a total waste of my time

Bangkok Subway experienced some technical problems yesterday evening, causing severe delays between 6 pm till closing time. I got down the MRT escalator at around 6.10 pm and saw a really huge crowd waiting at the station. This was not normal and the people on the platform looked really confused.

An announcement was made in Thai that people heading for Bang Sue had to switch trains at Rama 9 station. A farang counldn't understand the Thai announcement and asked the male staff member if the train would go to Sukhumvit. The dude did not reply immediately, but pretended to investigate the matter by walking towards the MRT route map, looking at it for a sec and then escaped from the scene. It appeared like "he don't love falang". So I walked over and explained to the gentleman that it goes to Sukhumvit, but required a train switch for people going further than Rama 9 station.

The train finally arrived but when the doors opened, only a handful of tiny people could make it inside and I decided to ditch this one as it was way too crowded. But the doors didn't close after a while, so I walked towards the other end of the train to check for a few inches of space, if available. I managed to squeeze in on the last compartment and stood there waiting for the doors to close with my body tilted to a 70 degree angle from my waist up. There were several announcements that the train is ready to move to the next station, but it just never took off! After a longer while the doors closed and the train moved to the next station.

As the train arrived at the next station the doors opened and there were even more people waiting in the queue, a few of them managed to get in by shoving. This made things worse as the train got overcrowded. The queue on the platform was jam-packed extending up to the opposite platform! As I had to hold on to the 70 degree pose for so long, my right obliques were getting tired and I was beginning to get muscle fatigue. I wanted to take some pictures of the crowd but it wasn't that convenient. As usual, it took a long time for the doors to close and the train to take off for the next station.

When the train arrived at Rama 9 station I had to go through a "get off the train challenge", since very few people got off the train. After feeling so relieved to make it off, I heard another announced that proved the earlier announcement wrong! The train switch was to take place at Thailand Culturual Center and not Rama 9. This sounded so dumb! How do I get back into the train now?

I walked around and was lucky again to hear 2 women whispering "let's get off this train, I'm suffocating" and they just got off the train while minding the gap between the train and the platform. I took their place just by the door and stood there for a while, when I looked out the door and noticed a young Thai dude enjoying his comic so much that he did not seem to bother about the train delay. I managed to take a photo of this guy as seen in the picture below:

After the train left, it finally arrived at Soon Watthanatham station and everybody gets off the train, it was almost 7 pm then. Imagine an overcrowded train with everybody disembarking at the same time, all heading for a narrow escalator, while pushing each other! Nobody was willing to take the staircase next to it, which was totally empty. I decided the only quick way out is to avoid the pushing and get to the stairway. I took a long U-turn walk and made it for the stairs without pushing anybody! I then made it out of the station and got to Esplanade, and started feeling hungry early that day, so went had some Korean Pork Rice for dinner.

It was quite a challenge for me as I've never seen so many people at a station before except on the public opening day of the MRT on 3 July, 2004, when I took that first ride. Read about it in 2Bangkok.com - 7:14pm, July 3, 2004 - The subway is OPEN!

The MRT was functioning normally this morning thanks to the "repair gangsters" as reported in Bangkok Post newspaper this morning:

[Repair gangs were working overnight to solve the problem which had slowed the MRT subway service to a virtual crawl on the Bang Sue line.

The problem occurred between Huai Khwang and Sutthisan stations, affecting services along the entire MRT route from Hua Lamphong to Bang Sue.

Passengers had to disembark between Thailand Cultural Centre and Phahon Yothin stations, with a shuttle train travelling on a single track carrying them between the two points.

Some travellers said their trip took up to an hour longer than usual.

The glitch hit during rush hour, at about 6.15pm, and had still not been repaired by midnight, when trains end their daily run.

Officials expected normal services would resume this morning.

"We have sent technicians inside the tunnel to find out what the problem is," the governor of the Mass Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), Prapas Chongsanguan, said last night.

Chartchai Praditpong, public relations director of Bangkok Metro Plc (BMCL), said: "We don't yet know yet what happened to the system, but it was a technical problem that stopped the normal operation of the trains."

Roughly 50,000 passengers were affected, he said.

Subway commuters complained about the delays.]

Google apologizes to bloggers for the S-word

Google had offered their sincere apologies last Friday, for locking down many blogs under the Blogger.com domain after mistakenly marking them as Spam.

Google's official blog Blogger Buzz had this to say in their post titled Spam Fridays,

"While we wish that every post on this blog could be about cool features or other Blogger news, sometimes we have to step in and admit a mistake.

We've noticed that a number of users have had their blogs mistakenly marked as spam, and wanted to sound off real quick to let you know that, despite it being Friday afternoon, we are working hard to sort this out. So to those folks who have received an email saying that your blog has been classified as spam and can't post right now, we offer our sincere apologies for the trouble.

We hope to have this resolved shortly, and appreciate your patience as we work through the kinks."

The next day they offered another one You Are Not Spam

Google insists that the problem is purely due to their computer algorithm. They said they tracked down the problem to a bug in their data processing code that locked blogs even when their algorithms concluded they were not spam.

But it seems that bloggers who are campaigning against Senator Obama's presidential run have had similar problems with their blogs being marked as Spam and their accounts temporarily frozen. Here's an article New York Sun Covers Shut-Down of Mitchell Langbert's Blog/Google Apologizes about it.

Photos of Angeline Jolie and Brad Pitt's newborn twins released

Here's a first look at Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's newborn twins - Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. These exclusive photos claim to be the world's most expensive baby snaps. The couple are seen dressed completely in white.

PEOPLE magazine reportedly paid $US 14 million for the exclusive rights to the photos in the US. Britain's Hello! magazine won the exclusive rights to the same shots everywhere else. The price for the celebrity baby photographs is more than double the $US 6 million PEOPLE paid for Jennifer Lopez's twins on a March cover.

"It is chaos, but we are managing it and having a wonderful time," Jolie tells PEOPLE of daily life at the Château Miraval in Provence, France, where the couple's four older children – Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2, have been enjoying a summer of outdoor play on the château's sprawling grounds. Pitt quoted: "It's still a cuckoo's nest".

The couple are expected to donate the proceeds to their charity, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Witthayu Road sidewalk replaced at last

Finally, the sidewalk of Witthayu (Wireless) Road has been repaired and ready for Web 2.0 a brisk walk after so many days of repair work. Earlier the footpath was quite damaged and on several occasions I had to bear the sight of women walking on their high heels trip over or have their stilettos stuck in between grids, cracks or sewer cover holes.

These pavements used to suck all the way up to All Season's Place, which reminds me of their website which looks really cheap, unlike their rental rates. Witthayu Road is a prime location in Bangkok's CBD, with the landmark All Seasons Place which is a hi-class and luxurious residential, corporate and hotel complex.

The pavement used to be so bad right from the exit of the overhead foot-bridge from BTS Ploenchit. Most people getting off the BTS Skytrain would wait for the All Seasons Place (Conrad) free shuttle bus service to get there. Since I'm a really fast walker, I don't have the patience to wait for the free shuttle bus, so I prefer walking especially if I'm late.

In the picture below you can see a lady sweep the sidewalk while a farang walks by

Bangkok teen kills taxi driver, imitating online game Grand Theft Auto

Bangkok Post reports that a Polwat Chinno, a 19 year old Mathayom 6 (12th Grade) student stabbed a taxi driver to death in Bangkok yesterday, acting out a robbery he copied from the online game Grand Theft Auto (GTA). Police were called in by the neighbors to Soi Charan Sanitwong 77 in Bang Phlad district about 2.30 am after being woken up by a constantly blowing car horn and saw people struggling inside a pink color taxi.

Police arrived and saw the student trying to steer the taxi backwards, but the soi (street) was a dead end. The teen had locked himself in the car but was finally persuaded to get out of the cab.

The body of the taxi driver named Mr. Kuan Pohkang, 54, from Maha Sarakham, was on the back seat. He was stabbed about 10 times by two sharp knives that were found nearby. There was blood all over the vehicle.

Police said Polwat confessed to being addicted to the online game Grand Theft Auto and said killing seemed easy in the game. He imitated a scene where a criminal kills a driver for his car to escape police. The game allows people to play the role of a criminal in a big city and climb up the criminal ladder. They are given various missions to complete, such as bank robbery and assassinations.

"I needed money to play the game every day. My parents give me only 100 Baht a day, which is not enough. I am also fed up with them fighting. They are civil servants and do not make good money," he said.

"Today (Saturday) my mother gave me 500 Baht, so in the evening I went to the Lotus superstore and bought knives." He flagged down one taxi near his house on Soi Charan Sanitwong 75, but the place was crowded so he did not make a move. He tried again and was picked up by Mr. Kuan the victim, hoping the older man would not resist him.

When the taxi arrived at the destination, he pulled out a knife and held it against the driver's neck. He said he did not intend to kill him but the driver reached for a metal bar under a console and tried to hit the boy. He stabbed the driver several times, killing him, then dragged the body onto the back seat and sat behind the wheel. He could not drive, but thought it would be easy like in the game. He was still struggling with the car when police arrived.

Mr. Manon Pohkang, 25, the victim's son, said he was shocked by the sudden loss of his father, who was the family's bread winner and was trying to repay loans to a bank and some loan sharks. "He was a nice man, who harmed no one," he said.

Polwat was charged with robbery causing death and possession of knives.

Teenage kids are so addicted to online games these days that they are mixing up virtual reality with the real world. It is such a tragic incident. I hope that the government takes stricter measures to control internet cafes to avoid such an incident in future. I used to enjoy playing GTA but not on the killing part, more of the relaxed driving part with my favorite music playing in the car, and then hijacking the next car that looks cooler.

Wowzio widgets are based on open standards (javascript & css) as their creators claim, and supports all blogging platforms that allow javascript to be embedded. The creators of Wowzio also claim that "the architecture is designed for high performance and scale, from the ground up". The winners of the 2008 MTV Asia Awards walked away with the Golden M Bar trophies.

One of the highlights of the MTV Asia Awards 2008 will be the design of the Golden M Bar trophy, which transcends the conventional template of other award trophies. The MTV Asia Awards trophy embodies the “breaking rule” philosophy of the brand, providing viewers, fans and artists alike with off-the-wall creativity and inspiration. This year, MTV will be presenting the winners with a heavyweight item to mark the return of a glamorous M - a gold bar in the shape of an ‘M’. The trophy is plated in 24K gold by Risis, MTV’s official partner for the trophy. Each trophy comes in a customized velvet case and envelope.

“M is back and what more to make a statement than with a gold bar in a Casino resort, Genting – The City of Entertainment? It is extravagant, lavish and over-the-top, the ultimate Blink! Other than putting the M back into music, we’re also bringing the Mojo back into the most authoritative International Music Awards Show in Asia,” said Silvia Goh, Vice President, Multiplatform Content.

“All that glitter may be gold after all!” added Silvia Goh.

Thai Etiquette - DOs and DON'Ts in Thailand

Here is a list of Do’s and Don’t’s in Thailand, most of which are common-sensical, with some important points that should be noted if you ever plan a trip to Thailand.

When in Bangkok, do as the Thais do - just like the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, which is used to advise people to adapt to the culture of the places that they visit. When visiting any country, you need to respect the local people and their customs just like you would do in your home country. Thais are generally very tolerant and hospitable people, and the average tourist will have no difficulty in adjusting to the local customs.

THE DO's:

DO respect Thai customs. While Thais are generally forgiving towards visitors, disrespect towards images of Buddha or the Royal Family will not be tolerated.

DO smile whenever you can. Thais smile under any kind of situation, a cultural habit that many Westerners find it hard to understand.

DO show respect for Buddhism and anything associated with the Buddhist religion. Dress properly when entering a Buddhist temple. Miniskirts, shorts, sleeveless, and slippers are unacceptable when entering Buddhist temples.

DO call Thai people by their first names, but add the title "Khun" (Mr, Ms & Mrs) for adults. Don't be surprised if you are addressed as 'Khun James' or 'Khun John' instead of your surname.

DO follow common sense health precautions and check with your local doctor on current vaccination recommendations for traveling within Thailand.

DO ensure you have adequate travel insurance and that it covers both medical treatment and unexpected losses/expenses/theft.

DO be careful when driving in Thailand. Only use car hire companies which offer full insurance coverage.

DO take care of your valuables at all times and report any loss immediately to the nearest tourist police office.

DO be careful with your passport. Be on guard against pickpockets, chain-snatchers or inadvertent loss.
